Palladino

2015 Barolo Riserva 'San Bernardo'

91

The 2015 Barolo Riserva San Bernardo has aromas of wild strawberry compote, crushed roses, vanilla, and dried autumn leaves. The palate is tension-driven, with tart cherry pit, dried orange peel, and warming clove spice. Its structure is forward and angular, with gripping tannins that persist through a long finish. Hold 3-5 years and drink 2024-2040.

Palladino

2017 Barolo 'Ornato'

93

Ornato is on a fully south facing slope located in the southern end of the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. Aromatically, the 2017 Barolo Ornato is ripe with tobacco, dried black cherry, tar, and licorice. There is full structure and generous fruit up front noted by dried apricot, cranberry compote, and orange zest, with sturdy and ripe tannins. My personal favorite within the lineup of the Palladino 2017s, I like it for its balance and classic appeal. Drink 2024-2042.

Palladino

2017 Barolo 'Parafada'

91

The 2017 Barolo Parafada is highly aromatic with luxurious aromas of cedar, vanilla, wild strawberry leather, and baking spice. The palate is fresh with pomegranate, tobacco leaf, cola, and stony earth as well as building tannic grip. This shows off a more modern aesthetic in the lineup with regard to its oak presence and will need some time to integrate. Cellar for 3-6 years and drink 2025-2040.

Palladino

2017 Barolo 'Serralunga'

92

The 2017 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba’s more volatile aromas of tar quickly blow off to reveal well-integrated and floral notes of classic ripe cherry, clove and star anise. The palate is pure and inviting, with dried raspberry fruit, black tea, and dried apricot. There is an openness to the structure reflective of the vintage, with fully ripe tannins and approachable fruit. Allow for a decant if opening early, though there is no need to be shy with its enjoyment now. Drink 2022-2038.

Tenute Emera

2017 Primitivo di Manduria

Very Good

Bright ruby red; aromas of charcoal, black cherry and mace. Medium-full, this is very ripe with rich black spice notes, balanced acidity and good persistence. There is
evident oak and the charred flavors dominate; still this is a flavorful, spicy red that will
please many. Best to let it sit a year, enjoy over the next 2-3 years.

Tenute Emera

2017 Anima di Negroamaro

93

Ruby red; aromas of blackberry, black currant and a hint of clove. Medium-full with very good concentration, this is ripe and forward with a nicely defined mid-palate, balancing acidity, medium-weight tannins and well managed wood notes. I do love the focus on varietal purity in this wine, as well as the impressive complexity and persistence. Enjoy over the next 3-6 years.

Tenute Emera

2017 Anima di Negroamaro

88

The 2017 Anima di Negroamaro Tenute Emera is dark and spicy in the glass, and tart woodland berries and peppery herbs form its bouquet. The textures are smooth and pliant, contrasted by salty minerals and brisk acidity that helps energize the red currant and cranberry fruit profile. An odd blend of cocoa and inner earth tones lingers as this tapers off with medium length.

Cantina Moros

2016 Salice Salentino Riserva

91

A mix of black cherries, sage and smoky camphor lifts up from the 2016 Rosso Riserva
Moros. This is a soft and pliant effort offering a pure display of ripe plums, balsamic spice and dark inner florals. Residual acids and saline-minerality linger, creating mouthwatering tension through the close, as this tapers off to a hint of sour citrus. It takes some time for the Moros to reveal all of its charms in the glass, but it’s well worth the wait. This is a blend
of 90% Negroamaro and 10% Malvasia Nera.

Cantina Pardi

2019 Montefalco Rosso

90

The 2019 Montefalco Rosso blasts up with a dark and intense display of crushed raspberries, cherries, cloves and smoke contrasted by mentholated herbs. It’s soft and fleshy in feel, lifted by nervous acidity, with saturating wild berry fruits and minerals that seem to reverberate across the senses. There’s so much energy mixed with primary concentration, as this tapers off long and violet-toned, with a vivid note of holiday cranberry sauce lingering on. The 2019 is a full-throttle expression that's aching to please, yet it could use a little more time to rest in the bottle. This is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 7.5% Merlot and 7.5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cantina Pardi

2016 Montefalco Sagrantino 'Sacrantino'

91

The 2016 Sacrantino, a Montefalco Sagrantino, opens dusty and floral in character, with cooling notes of mint and crushed stone giving way to bright cherry and strawberry tones. The silky textures create an impression of pure elegance as ripe red fruits and spices give way to sweet tannins and hints of smoke toward the close. This is lightly structured yet already quite palatable, tapering off to tart berries and residual acids that keep the mouth watering for more.

Cantina Pardi

2016 Montefalco Sagrantino

92

The 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino opens slowly in the glass, peppery herbs and florals giving way to black cherries and a hint of balsamic spice. It’s velvety in texture yet lifted in feel, with bright wild berry fruits and saturating minerals that add a more tactile feel toward the close. While youthfully structured and dry, there’s still early appeal to be found here as the 2016 finishes long, resonating on red currants and inner rose tones.
