2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 'La Rosta'
92
There’s an alluring richness to the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella La Rosta that keeps you coming back to the glass with a display of ripe plums, gingery spice, rum cake and molasses. It’s velvety in texture yet balanced with a zing of bright acids and sour citrus, adding a high-energy feel. Tart Carménère and blackberries linger, along with peppery inner florals and bitter baker’s chocolate. There’s a lot of tension here to offset La Rosta’s confectionary persona, making for a pleasurable experience full of contrasts.

2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
90
The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico wafts up from the glass with a dark and inviting bouquet that blends rich cherry and plum sauces and hints of cinnamon and mocha. This washes across the palate with silky elegance, well balanced by tart red and hints of blue fruit, along with zesty acidity and tactile minerality. There’s admirable balance and poise here, especially considering the vintage, as it tapers off to notes of bitter coffee and inner purple florals. This palatable effort can excel on its own or at the dinner table, a trait not often associated with Amarone.

2018 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 'Cicilio'
89
The 2018 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore Cicilio impresses through a finessed and airy display of fresh violets and mint plus white smoke, blueberry and a subtle hint of animal musk. It’s silky in texture with ripe red fruits, salty minerals and a mix of inner rose and lavender tones. There’s nothing out of place in this balanced and juicy effort, which seems to have something new to say each time I revisit it, as it tapers off with floral nuances and a hint of plum.

2019 Valpolicella Classico
87
The 2019 Valpolicella Classico is a bright and juicy effort offering notes of sweet cherry, clove and rosehip. It’s soft and fleshy, with a mix of brisk acids and minerals that frame the expression nicely. A citrus and herbal twang lingers through the mouthwatering finale.

2016 Etna Rosso 'Cosentino'

Iconic in its lovely setting, daughter of red and white flowers. Hibiscus, magnolia and lime are the main scents that combine well with chopped almonds and wet licorice stick. Medium-full body, sweet and round tannins in the shape and a lovable finish born of an extraordinary territory. Drink now.

Il Poggiolo
2015 Brunello di Montalcino
93
A paradox, the traditionally framed Il Poggiolo Brunello marries the ripeness of the 2015 vintage with a lovely austerity. Not a blowsy wine, it combines dark cherry-like fruit with a core of minerals. Importantly, especially for the vintage, it has great acidity, which imparts a wonderful vivacity to the wine. Firm, not aggressive tannins, add structure. It impresses with grace rather than opulence. Surprisingly engaging now, its real stature will emerge in another five years or so.

2017 Etna Rosso 'San Teodoro'
89
Earthy aromas of underbrush, scorched soil, mature dark-skinned berry and a whiff of game lead the nose. The aromas carry over to the smooth, lithe palate along with prune, star anise and balsamic notes of camphor. It's already accessible, with polished tannins. Drink through 2024.

2019 Etna Rosato 'OMA'

White spring wild flower, red berry and Mediterranean scrub form the delicate nose along with a whiff of yellow stone fruit. On the bright elegant palate, vibrant acidity offsets juicy pomegranate, sour cherry and white pepper before a savory, saline finish.
